Thalaiyar falls is the pride of Tamilnadu, as this is the highest falls in the state and sixth highest in India. This 975 ft tall waterfalls looks like a rat tail at a long distance, hence why it is also called as Rat tail falls. The lovely falls is located in the Palani hills of Dindigul district, Tamilnadu.
Thalaiyar Falls can without a doubt be called the pride of Palani Hills. The reason, you may want to know? Well, the waterfall is scenic and pristine like no other place and captivates your senses with its surreal prettiness. It is Tamil Nadu’s highest falls. As far as world ranking is concerned, it is ranked at number 267.
A little something about the falls.
Do you know why the falls is also called Rat Tail? Well, the cliff point from where the fall’s water spurts down, looks like the tail of a rat, and hence the moniker. If you’re visiting it in months other than monsoons, you may spot this waterfall from Dum Dum Rock. Its a viewpoint located on the ghat road between Batalugundu and Kodai. Otherwise, on cloudy days, the falls remain hidden away. The beautiful contrast of white textured water against the black rock of the cliff captures you the moment you lay eyes on it. This is one of the must-see places while it comes to sightseeing in Kodaikanal.
Legend has it that God Muruga, the main deity worshiped in the region, loved to visit this falls every time he visited Palani Hills. Legend or not, we know that earthly beings would definitely love coming here to revel in this place serenity!
A hiker’s paradise
You have to come here if you’re into hiking as one can experience the true beauty of nature here. Hikers start their trek at Manjalar Dam, pass through charming orchards of mango and then, take the trail that passes through potato fields. After circling the reservoir, they reach the temple dedicated to Goddess Kamakshi. There is a stream and hikers have to follow it to cross huge rocks till they arrive at the fall’s basin. The hiking trail spans 15 kilometers in total and can prove to be challenging if one is not fit. Its a full day hike.
Some information that can help
- The waterfall is open between 10 in the morning till 6 in the evening. If you’re coming on Sunday, it will be closed.
- There is no entry charge to pay.
- Perumal Malai is a village from where the water comes to the falls. It is likely not fit for drinking.
- You can visit it from October to March when the weather is favorable for hiking. The monsoons are also favored by most as they can see the falls in its full form.
- Other places that can be visited are Manjalar Lake, and the temple of Devi Kamakshi.
- Its advised that if you’re not a professional hiker, then do not hike here as it can prove fatal.
- Madurai is the nearest railhead as well has an airport.
